History
On 5 May, Hans Niehaus founds the company HAN-Bürogeräte as a commercial enterprise in Bielefeld and initially starts manufacturing wooden letter trays with two employees. The portfolio quickly expands and wooden filing cabinets are added.
The first company building is constructed, replacing the provisional production facility in Bielefeld. In the mid-1960s, Hans Niehaus already employs 10 people in production and administration.
The company now has six distribution warehouses in Germany with corresponding commercial agencies.
Production of wooden filing boxes starts in Greece. The distribution of plastic card index boxes begins in Denmark. At this time, the company already employed 60 people.
Trade in plastic card index boxes from Austria begins.
The administration building and logistic are built in Herford. Another production facility for HAN filing cabinets is completed in Verl near Gütersloh. The company’s own HAN distribution warehouse is built near Frankfurt.
The administration moves from Bielefeld to Herford.
The company starts its own production of letter trays, waste paper baskets and office sets made of plastic with the purchase of the first of its own plastic injection moulding machines. HAN receives several design awards for these first productions.
The expansion of plastic processing to include a wide range of filing and archiving articles for the office, with over 50 new products, was an important step for the company. Development and production are carried out exclusively in Germany.
The plastics production facility in Herford is expanded with Hall 2. An additional construction phase, Hall 3 as an extension of the warehouse and shipping department, is also completed.
The generation change: Ralf Niehaus takes over the management from Hans Niehaus.
Construction of a state-of-the-art logistic centre with 9.000 pallet spaces at the company’s Herford site. The French sales company HAN France is founded.

HAN-Bürogeräte GmbH & Co. KG becomes HAN GmbH & Co. KG
We can do more than “just” office! In future, this will also be reflected in the company name.
As a consistent continuation of the brand for organisational solutions at home and in the office, HAN is dropping the office equipment part of the name with immediate effect. Another step towards exploring new markets in the lifestyle and living sector.
